be no home playoff game for now at least. but there is still a little glimmer of hope as the o's, they now prepare for texas. so some guidances and bad news. -- good news and bad news as far as the orioles goes. thank you for joining us. i'm megan pringle. >> and i'm charlie crowson. weather and traffic in just a minute but first one of the big stories last night's debate. >> it went late i'm not sure if you saw it but if not we're going to get you all caught up. today republican mitt romney and president barack obama they go their separate ways. this after meeting for the first time their first debate in colorado. texass, health care, jobs, the taxes, health care, jobs, those were the big subjects. >> reporter: charger mitt romney came out strong in yesterday's first showdown between the candidates and a cnn snap poll shows out of a sampling of voters who watched the debate, 67% say romney won. versus obama's 25%.

the first presidential debate focused on domestic issues and the candidates found plenty to spar over. >> i like the fact that if my state we had republicans and democrats come together and work together. what you did instead was to push through a plan without a zippable republican vote. >> over the that's two years health care premiums have gone up. it's true and they've gone up slower than any time in the last 50 years. >> reporter: in the and the deaf it the -- and the deficit. >> i put together a specific $4 trillion deficit reduction plan. >> my number one principle is there'll be no tax cut that adds to the deficit. >> reporter: the president challenged thnumbers. >> it is not possible to come up with enough deductions and loopholes that only affect high income individuals to avoid either raising the deficit, or burden the middle class. it's -- it's mad. >> reporter: romney emphasized

one of the campaign principles. >> it's absolutely extraordinary, we have 23 million people out of work. >> reporter: the debate low on drama and high on energy particularly from romney. >> the format lent itself to one of the candidates; i think he set the standard for it. i didn't think the president was rusty as much as i don't think anybody has ever spoken to him like that over the last four years. >> reporter: the real test comes on november 6th no matter what happened last night. the next presidential debate takes place on october 16th in new york. and the third at the end of the month in florida. the vice presidential candidates square off next week in kentucky. reporting live in denver, i'm sandra endo. back to you. all right, let's talk about what's going on right now. because we have some showers on maryland's most powerful radar. scattered in nature, they are widespread. we can see one around westminster now all this is sliding off to the north and east reisterstown getting in on

the action as well. as we slide around columbia, and ellicott city, we have one quick little shower that's pushing off to the the north and east there. and web they have one shore -- then we have one shore around sevenn that's starting to fizzle out as well. take the rain gear under one of the showers. they are very light in nature though. 70 degrees right now in arnold. that's another story this morning is that we are quite warm. quite mild. we can see the 70 for a dew point and also dealing with some patchy fog outside this morning. clarksville at 68-degrees with a dew point of 67 and we are quite humid as well. then right now we're at 74- degrees in easton. hour by hour forecast looks like this. by lunchtime mostly cloudy skies and 76 degrees. 82 and warm and we will get some sunshine in here as we head through the rest of today. let's get a check now of the abc2 timesaver traffic with lauren cook. good morning. patchy fog is a problem. yes, lynette you will want to expect reduced visibility especially if you're traveling in red rick. really going to be bad there. slow down and turn on the low beams. we have a crash to tell you about on 95 here along the

southbound lanes at cayton avenue. now it has been confined to the shoulder not causing too many delays as of yet. and fortunately if you are headed to the fort mchenry tunnel it will be nice and clear. harbor tunnel in great shape as well. here's what the beltway looks like in parkville at harford road. everything moving right along no delays traveling the outer loop from 95 all the way up to 83. that stretch will take you just the normal 11 minutes. over on the west side traffic just starting to pick up. but no significant delays you're looking at a 12 minute ride right now on the outer loop from 795 all the way down to 95. that's a look at your abc2 timesaver traffic. megan and charlie, over to you. we are following breaking news for you this morning. and getting new information a police shooting in east baltimore. and abc2 news' sherrie johnson is live outside city police headquarters and, it's raining out there right now. you guys have been working the phones and doing all you can. what have you learned so far? >> reporter: well, i just got off the phone with city police officer. we're here at city police headquarters here and i was trying to talk to some of the

officers, basically overnight about 12:30. take a look here. there was a shooting a police involved shooting here. it happened in the 1500 block of east lanvale street. this is near the oliver neighborhood. a few blocks east of green mount cemetery. now according to baltimore city police, one person was shot and was taken to the hospital. we do not know that person condition at this hour. a police officer was not injured in this shooting is. officers -- shooting. officers are releasing few details right now but they will have a media briefing later this morning. hopefully more details coming out of that and once we learn more we can share it with our audience here. reporting live in downtown baltimore, sherrie johnson, abc2 news. a deadly meningitis outbreak right now plaguing a handful obviously states across the country including maryland. abc2 news linda so is live this morning in federal hill with the latest details on what we need to know and how to keep ourselves safe. linda? >> reporter: so far, there have been two reported cases in

maryland. one person has died. health officials believe there could be more cases to come up in the near future. the outbreak has sickened 26 people in five states. it appears the rare form of meningitis came from contaminated steroid injections given for back pain. it's a viral strain that's not contagious. the people who got it here in maryland were exposed sometime in late july to late september. we've learned six facilities in the state unknowingly gave the contaminated shots. those locations include medical centers in baltimore, towson, edgewood, abingdon and bel air. the product has been pulled from the shelves. now patients who received the spinal injections can still get really sick. so health officials want to look out for symptoms like fever, headache, a stiff neck, nausea, or vomiting. most of the cases have been reported in tennessee. where a nashville clinic received most of those shipments. >> it really didn't get into any say of you have know fear or anything. i just sort of -- thought okay we're going to research this.

and of course the more i researched it the more worried i get. >> reporter: now the massachusetts pharmaceutical company that manufactured this drug has voluntarily recalled the product. linda so, abc2 news. all right, well, warning for you this morning about a meeting with people. that you do business with on craigslist. police say there have been two armed robberies in bolton hill. that community since sunday. both victims were lured to the area by people they thought were there to sell a car. we are working for you with some safety tips because we want you to know there are scrams out there -- scams out there involving craigslist. always meet people during the day and never do it alone. if you don't feel comfortable justwalk away. sometimes they don't go according to plan. the orioles had hoped to wrap up the regular season with a win last night if tampa guaranteeing at least one postseason playoff game at cam dan yards. but with the loss to the rays

and oakland winning over the texas rangers, so much stuff going on here megan. the o's now go on the road. hellickson kept baltimore at bay all night and evan longoria, a big night, three home runs and three rbis on the way to the 4-1 win. baltimore by that loss, now travels to arlington, texas for the one game a. l. wild card playoff friday night. it's not where they wanted to be, they wanted forhere with you at camden yards. but when you consider how far the team has come in a short time. you just tip your cap and get ready for some more postseason baseball. >> i told our guys how proud i am just to be associated with this bunch. they're a baseball playing bunch of guys that you know they'll let it rip in texas. >> i wish we could play at home every game. but i think we're in a good place right now. we know what we need to do. you know we have to go out and get after it. and i think we're excited. >> friday night's one game

playoff with the rangers will be in arlington. a team the orioles were 2-5 against in the regular season. should baltimore win that game, then it's back home to camden yards sunday to begin the divisional series against the new york yankees. and megan, our own christian schaffer will be in texas today providing reports as the o's continue their run through the postseason. >> i know we're looking forward to that. the heart pounding excitement of a playoff chase now being shadowed by some heartbreaking news to share with you this morning. the tragedy. we're talking about oakland a's pitcher gnat neshek, he and his wife were supposed to have one of the greatest weeks of their life. after the a's clinched a berth monday night pat was on the plane heading from oakland to florida. this was just in time for the birth of the couple's first child. a baby boy named derrick. sadly, less than 24 hours later the baby died in his mother's arms. the couple told the world through twitter late last night thatted this happened. his wife stephanie said there's no explanation for her son's death. she went on to write that her

"usa today's" ed baig gives the paper light high marks. >> the screen is really nice. the built-in light is really nice. they've got some nice features with this time to read and with x-ray. i think amazon has a really solid ereader. >> reporter: the paper light starts at 119 photographer. the sequel to angry birds is still breaking records. bad piggies hit the top of the

komen maryland raises money to battle breast cancer. >> they sure do and in an exclusive interview with jamie costello, the organization is saying donations are down a lot. >> it could have an effects fig take a look. >> it's been challenging to watch some of our progress slow down a little bit. >> even with the success of the first ever komen race for the cure here in ocean city, nobody thought it was going to get this bad. >> it's easy to hang in there when you really believe in the cause and you believe in the mission and you believe in the

work. >> 18 days away from the 20th race for the cure in hunt valley and programs are wobbling. women trying to copay for breast cancer treatment may not be able to. single moms may not be able to afford to put food in front of their children. >> that means that women may not be screened. >> how did we get here? is this a factor? earlier this year komen national cut funding to planned parenthood. did the controversy hit the local chapter? >> i honestly don't think that specifically the planned parenthood did. i think there's confusion with the national organization and the local organization and the difference between us. >> and the difference is, the local never dealt with planned parenthood. >> planned parenthood has never asked us for funding. >> they have called those who find out why and what they're hearing is the economy is really changing their course and there are more organizations and causes. >> search for the cures is going to go on and if we slow down any of the money that's being given to the organization, it's going to slow down that work. >> so the local wants to distance itself from the

last year you'll remember that was one of the first really really cold days of the fall season. we got a long way to go to get there. >> i know but you know we're going to have a powerful cold front that's going to be moving in here into the weekend and it's going to feel like a whole different story. >> really? >> i love that fall feeling though. it will be nice. >> exactly. the only thing is rain is going to come with it. be prepared for that. but for right now far cry from that. we are warm this morning. we're mild. you can see the 60s and 70s all across the board. but also we are dealing with some rain across the area right now. as we look at maryland's most powerful radar, we zoom in around care rolle county and also points to the north. i-83 this morning, heading to pennsylvania. glen rock, new freedom feeing in on heavier rain across the area. then the future trend which is going to be bringing thus storm system making its way to the north. that warm front already passed through the area, we're waiting for the cold front to move through. behind that drier air and also

tomorrow is still going to be a warm day on tap. not until we see the cold front back to the west. that's going to be bringing us chilly air into the weekend. now the tropics because yes we have snow across the northern plains. but we're also still talking about the tropics and we have tropical storm oscar as of now. this is a ways away from the western antilles and away from the u.s. and this is going to stay that way. it's a healthy looking thunderstorm, you can see the thunderstorm wraps around the middle of it but the good news is once again not dealing with that at all. this is the hour by hour new york city and through the morning that temperature at 70- degrees with some patchy fog but by lunchtime at 76-degrees and the temperatures will shoot all the way up into the 80s. i'm forcing 82 degrees for a high today. and the -- forecasting 82 degrees for a high today. and the seven day forecast if you like a cooldown you will get it. because into saturday 75 degrees. that feels good. nice and pleasant. but there's the rain. there's the chilly temperature. 59 degrees as we head into sunday and columbus day right

but now a new study says even more run. the numbers are high it could affect your child's thinking skills much later in life. >> this shows there are long- term effects of having high blood pressure in pregnancy. we mostly have been thinking it's a short-term ifect but here's a situation in which it affects the offspring long after the pregnancy is over. >> researchers at the university of helsinki studied more than 400 men. the men had their thinking abilities tested at 20 and then in their 60s. it turns out the men whose mothers had high blood pressure while pregnant scored lower on the thinking tests than those whose moms did not have their high blood pressure. this leads researchers to think that mental declines later on in life may be traced back to the experience in the womb. cell phones ipods and ipads are banned in all new york city schools. but that doesn't mean the
